Demurrage

If the containers supplied by the carrier are not returned to the carrier after being unloaded by the consignee within the free time specified in the tariff, the delay fee which the carrier has the right to demand from the consignee or the shipper in accordance with the provisions of the bill of lading, and which is processed for each day of delay, is called “container demurrage”.

Demurrage

For imports to USA; it is a charge applied to containers that are not picked up in a USA ports longer than their allotted free time, or past the "Last Free Day." The Ocean carrier or the port operator charges this fee starting with the day after the last free day and it is charged per container / per day until the container is picked up. 

For exports from USA; it is a charge applied to containers that are delivered to a USA port before the earliest return date. The Ocean carrier or the port operator charges this fee starting with the gate-in date, and it is charged per container / per day until the earliest return date. 

Rules and regulations for New York demurrage tariff is in line with updated New York Terminal Conference (NYTC) tariff. Please refer to “www.apmterminals.com” for more information on NYTC tariff. 

Per Diem

Per diem is a detention fee where a filed tariff rate is charged to truckers per container per day, after the expiration of free time, until the equipment is returned to the port or container yard. 
 

Container Detention (USA)

Container detention is a fee that applies to rail intermodal containers where a filed tariff rate is charged to the shipper or consignee for using equipment beyond the given free time after the container deramp and available to pick up, regardless of full or empty.

Per Diem: On all interchange equipment, the day of interchangeand the first four days for dry containers and the first three days for special containers after the day of interchange will be considered days of grace during which time no charge will be made for the use of the container. Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays will be excluded as chargeable days for the purpose of computing free time only. The holidays refer to those enumerated in labor contracts applicable to terminal operations at point of interchange. In the meanwhile non-working days of the ports are mentioned below;

Norfolk VIT; Saturday & Sunday
Savannah GPA; Sunday
*After the expiration of free time full per diem charge will be assessed on a straight calendar day basis  except the daysthe ports are closed such as offical holidays, announced heavy weather conditions,     terminal strikes etc.
